GOT MILK? donates book covers to California schools With tough economic times and the cost of supplies continuing to rise, educators are working hard to preserve school materials so that students can use them for years to come. To contribute to their efforts and just in time for back to school, the California Milk Processor Board – creator of GOT MILK? – is donating more than 750,000 book covers to nearly 600 high schools across the state. This is the second annual donation program as a result of positive response from educators last year. “We appreciate the book covers,” said Helen Holroyd, library assistant at Casa Grande High School in Petaluma. “Kids think they’re fun and the teachers just love them. They do a wonderful job at protecting our books from normal wear and tear.”

Cox looks to First5 to move Calif. budget impasse In answer to what may become a record delay in the passage of a state budget, Senator Dave Cox (R-Fair Oaks) issued the following statement. “To break the impasse, the Governor and lawmakers should look closely at existing government programs that are not providing basic and necessary services. Fifty-nine First5 bureaucracies are hoarding $2.5 billion in savings accounts, and doling out millions on administrative costs and ‘fun activities.’” “At a time when children and families are being cut from Healthy Families and Medi-Cal, First5 is spending tax payer dollars on programs that have questionable benefits for needy children and their families. If families had to choose between music circles or receiving healthcare, I think they would pick the latter.”
Outdoor watering 5 p.m. - 10 a.m. only The Mammoth Community Water District would like to remind the community that outdoor watering is permitted from 5 p.m. to 10 a.m. only. Both hand watering and drip irrigation systems are included in this restriction, although both hand watering and drip irrigation are exempt from the every other day watering schedule. All other forms of irrigation are allowed on an every other day basis; water may not pool, pond, or run off applied areas; all hoses must be equipped with an automatic shut off device; and leaks on the customers side of the property line must be repaired by the customer.
Tehipite Fire rollouts continue growth The Tehipite Fire, a lightning-ignited fire in the wilderness of Kings Canyon National Park, has grown beyond the fireline on its southwest and northeast flank. It is currently mapped at 978 acres. The fire spread from either rollouts–burning material that rolls down the steep terrain and ignites fire outside on the fireline–or from a spot fire created from embers blown across the line. Control objectives have been hampered by steep, inaccessible terrain that presents safety concerns for firefighters. Direct fire response is unsafe along much of the perimeter. Firefighters are revising the strategy for the management of this fire to address safety and cost concerns.

Of the fatalities outlined in the report, 19 were fishing-related, 20 involved alcohol, and 39 individuals drowned.

Proposition 8 endorsed by California Catholic Conference The California Catholic conference supports Proposition 8's language that states that only marriage between a man and a woman should be valid or recognized in California. Proposition 8 is intended to strengthen Proposition 22 – the “California Defense of Marriage Act” – which passed in 2000 and was overturned by the recent California Supreme Court decision in May of this year.
Legislative Measure to Help Reduce Shaken Baby Syndrome Lawmakers are pushing for the passage of Senate Bill 825 to establish a statewide shaken baby prevention program. This bill would establish a three-year parent education program in hospitals throughout California patterned after a successful program in New York State. Nearly a third of children diagnosed with Shaken Baby Syndrome die. Of the surviving children, 60 – 75 percent live with a significant disability. Experts estimate that 150 infants and young children become victims of a severe form of Shaken Baby Syndrome in California every year.

Town taking applications for strategic marketing partnership funding
The Tourism and Recreation Department is accepting 2008/09 Strategic Marketing Partnership Funding requests. New this year, all organizations operating within the Town of Mammoth Lakes are eligible to apply for funding – not just nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations. The Tourism and Recreation Commission recently changed the funding allocation to a strategic marketing partnership with local-based organizations and events to emphasis marketing and promotional activities, instead of operations. For consideration, applicants must provide proof of 501 (c) (3) status or equivalent (if necessary), name and contact information of Board of Directors, a 2008/09 financial budget and marketing plan. Funding Requests are due by Friday, Sept. 12, 2008 at 5 p.m. Applications are available at the Tourism and Recreation Department or online at www.visitmammoth.com/companyinfo. |
