Five teams played on a beautiful Mammoth day. The Rookies started the day off under coaches James Gray, Bobbie Pena and Ethan Kurashewich. For some of these 6-8 year olds this was their first game ever of tackle football. This is a training team so scores are not kept. Highlights included a 40 yard run by Ramon Yanez and a long run by Otto Gubser. All the Rookies put their heart into the game. Next up were the Freshmen, coached by Bobbie Pena and James Gray. They fought a valiant defense holding RIM to three touchdowns and one point after. Jesse Montanez spent a lot of time in the RIM backfield disrupting their plays. Junior Ramerez and Cody Elliott contributed long runs but the Freshmen couldn't get into the end zone. Final score: Mammoth 0 - RIM 19. The Sophomores under coaches Lyn Morris, Rob Broyles and Glenn Kreis fought hard against a large RIM team led by Quarterback Brett Morris. Steven Orrick and others carried the ball but couldn't get the team into the end zone. Julia Loera and Audrie Rodrequez helped stop RIM runs along with the other Mammoth defenders. Final score: Mammoth 0 - RIM 37.
Our 2007 Super Bowl Juniors coached by John Trujillo, Ed Graef and Rick DeVore and led by veteran Quarterback Jay Trujillo played a strong game against the RIM team. Jay advanced the ball to the one yard line and then jumped into the end zone on the next play for the first touchdown. He also completed a pass to Nathan Liuag. War horse Ryan DeVore stopped RIM runs and ran around them to score two touchdowns on 70-plus-yard runs. Alex Hamilton took in a point after. Every Junior contributed to a strong game. Final score: Mammoth 19, RIM 46. Coached by John Trujillo and Rick Blake, the Seniors came out to play. Denis Orrick ran 53 yards to score the touchdown with Tyler Wormhoudt taking in the point after. Nathan Everson stopped a RIM point after. While RIM scored touchdowns, the Mammoth defense blocked many of their point after attempts. The small Senior team played valiantly but couldn't add any more touchdowns. Final score: Mammoth 7 - RIM 44. More pictures and information are available on the Mammoth Youth Football website at www.mammothyouthfootball.org. Next games are Sept. 20 in Mojave.
