MAMMOTH TIMES PHOTO/SUSAN MORNING The plane wreckage of millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett was found yesterday evening just east of the Minarets around 6:30 p.m., according to Madera County Sheriff John Anderson at an early morning press conference today at the Mammoth Yosemite Airport. The wreckage was positively identified by the aircraft call sign or tail number, N250R, found among the large debris field. No remains have yet been located, and no new belongings have been found apart from what local resident Preston Morrow discovered during his cross-country hike on Monday.
“We're certainly going to do an extensive search for human remains,” Anderson said. However, authorities will soon be hampered in that endeavor by a storm expected to arrive this evening.
The National Transportation Safety Board will be handling the investigation into why the plane crashed. Mark Rosenker, Acting Chairman of the NTSB, arrived from Washington, D.C., in his Gulfstream at the Mammoth Yosemite Airport, where a command center has been established, just before 9:00 a.m. - Catherine Billey (posted yesterday – 9:15 a.m.)
