Counting Fish at Hot Creek |

Over three days starting Tuesday, Oct. 21, as many as 25 volunteers donned waders and other fishing paraphernalia to help survey three different sections of Hot Creek. Each 200-foot section was netted at the top and at the bottom so the fish could not escape and then the water was electro-shocked. “The low voltage stunned the fish but did not hurt them,” said Mark Drew from CalTrout.
Volunteers used nets to catch the fish and put them into buckets. The fish were counted, measured and weighed before being released back into the water.
“This gives us a good understanding of the condition, population and size-class distribution of the fish,” Drew said.
“We need to find out how many big and small fish there are in certain sections of Hot creek.”
Drew said the idea is to have a program that over many years will help CalTrout understand the dynamics of Hot Creek. “If we see a downward trend in the fish population then we know something's not right and we can do something about it.” – SP
