Season opener scorches—Rookies rack up solid start, Freshmen falter, Juniors and Seniors log big wins
Story and photos by Don Deck Special to the Mammoth Times
What seemed like zillions of gallons of water and tons of ice kept the Mammoth Youth Football Huskies teams hydrated and cool as they defied the sizzling 111 degree heat and won three of their four games during their 2007 season opener in Trona on Aug. 25. The new young Rookie Team, all eight players, started the day with impressive plays for their first ever game. Although a score is not officially kept for the Rookies, they out scored the Trona team by two points with an impressive offense and scores by Max Mueller, Tony Marquez and Michael McLin.
The Freshmen were next. Steven Orrick dominated the Huskies running game behind the blocking of his team mates. They played hard and moved the ball, but were unable to get past a tough Trona defense and into the end zone. The Frosh Dawgs defense also had its hands full with Trona's offense, which scored three times to win 19-0. Mammoth's large Junior team, a very talented group, kicked off to Trona and held them out of the end zone for over half of the first quarter before getting the ball and launching their own offense. Quarterback Jay Trujillo moved his team down the field and ran in the first touchdown with Ryan DeVore taking in the point after. Jay intercepted a pass to stop Trona, then Daniel Quezada scored to make it 13-0. The kickoff pushed Trona back close to their own end zone, where Mammoth recovered a fumble and Tyler Wormhoudt scored to make it 19-0 at half time. While fighting the heat and holding Trona at bay, the Junior's Ryan DeVore scored twice in the second half and Andre Escobar kicked the final point after to make the final score 34-0 Mammoth. The Seniors, playing 8-man, closed out the day with an impressive win. They beat the heat and kept Trona from scoring. Nolen Toranzo, behind the blocking of his team, scored all five touchdowns with Eli Martin and quarterback Bryan Oliver scoring the points after. A highlight of the second half was a pass from Eli Martin to Riley Mueller. The entire team showed their talent playing together to shut out Trona 32-0. The next games are against Bishop, in Bishop, on Sept. 8. Visit the MYFL Web site at www.mammothyouthfootball.org for the complete schedule and more pictures.
