Mammoth Times Daily: Wednesday, July 28, 2010: Fire near Mono Craters grows to 1,000 acres

 Erratic winds whipped a fire near Mono Lake yesterday afternoon, growing the fire to 1,000 acres as of this morning. The fire, near the Mono Craters area and close to the junction of S.R. 120 East and U.S. 395, now has over 260 firefighters assigned to it, according to U.S. Forest Service/Inyo National Forest officials. The fire has closed 120 East for the time being and access to the South Tufa and Navy Beach area is also closed.

Four aircraft. including a helitanker, a helicopter and two air tankers will be on the fire today, as crews work to hold the northern flank of the fire near Highway 120 East.

The fire is estimated to be 20 percent contained.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.— WG

Mono County Supervisors Runoff

Vikki Magee Bauer         594        64%
Dorothy Burdette            321        36%

Last June the election for District 3 in Mono County was close. Too close for some. Incumbent Vikki Magee Bauer had 263 votes and newcomer Dorothy Burdette had 278 votes. A run-off election was slated for the November ballot between Bauer and Burdette.


Measure K (needed 55% to pass)


No                     1,417        51.64%
Yes                    1,327        48.36%

Bond measure to rebuild Mammoth High School, including improving technology, and science, vocational and technical classrooms; build classrooms at Mammoth Middle School; improve Mammoth Elementary School, including replacing roofing, insulation, and heating systems; and provide for an independent citizens’ oversight committee.

Jack Farrell and Gloria Vasquez win two two-year seats

Jack Farrell has 37 years experience as a teacher and support provider for teachers. Gloria Vasquez has 28 years as an educator, including Mammoth Middle School principal.
