Intersection of Old Mammoth Road and Meridian at noon on Jan. 2, 2006. At the PAOT special town council meeting, resident Tom Cage mentioned there were an estimated 40,000 people in Mammoth during that blizzard. “We had everyone in town,” he said. It’s one gauge of what it looks like during peak times. Mammoth Times Photo/Susan Morning “The one central issue is how dense is our community going to be? There hasn’t been one bit of process or even discussion had on that issue,” said Mammoth Mountain CEO Rusty Gregory. That has since changed. Council chambers were packed at a special meeting of the Mammoth Lakes Town Council on Oct. 28 addressing PAOT. A wide range of community members weighed in with suggestions as Mayor Wendy Sugimura, always mindful of process, documented public comment on flow charts with PAOT Options listed in red ink and PAOT Concerns enumerated in green. Density was the single most controversial issue of the 2007 General Plan process, Gregory reminded the council. He strongly applauded them for finally getting down to the matter and deciding how the town will apply PAOT calculations. The community wants to be less dense than where the town appears to be headed, he said.
