We appreciate the opportunity to represent our county

April 16, 2013

The Lee Vining High School Mock Trial team would like to thank the Mono County Bar Association for helping us raise money in support of our program.

The Bar Association hosted a fundraiser last week that helped our team pay for our recent to trip to compete at the Mock Trial State Championship in Riverside.

The event was held at CJ’s Grill in Mammoth where donations were accepted and CJ’s donated half of the luncheon’s proceeds to our team. In all, over $750 were raised to help cover hotel expenses and entry fees.

There were about 20 lawyers, staff, and court officials in attendance as students from Lee Vining put on a demonstration of their lawyerly skills. Julie Harris fielded friendly questions from her attorney, Jaxon Qualls, and then survived a set of much less friendly questions from prosecuting attorney, Olivia Nelson.

The students had a wonderful time and were honored by the attention from Mono County’s legal luminaries.

This year’s competition focused on a hit-and-run accident and the attempt to find out who was really driving the car that evening.

After months of preparation, the Lee Vining team defeated Coleville High’s team to earn the Mono County championship.

On March 22 and 23, Lee Vining students argued against county champions from all over the state. They put up a valiant fight against four tough teams and gained a fantastic amount of experience presenting arguments, questioning witnesses, and thinking on their feet in high-pressure situations. MVP honors were awarded to witnesses, Julie Harris and Tristan Blommer, and attorney, MacKenzie Kendall.

Mock trial presents an experience that gives students skills and training that are too often missing from the normal classroom experience.

Our students put out a tremendous effort this year and took great pride in their performance.

We appreciate the opportunity to represent our county and thank the Bar Association and CJ’s Grill for their support.
