A very swell time around here this past week, with Karla Souzaand Luis Mendezin town, and if you don’t know who they are, you’re not up to speed on the biggest film stars in Mexico. They starred in the brand new “Nosotros los Nobles,” and were here for a little rest and relaxation. By the way, Souza was big-time in Aspenbefore re-locating to Mexico City, in case you were wondering. …

And speaking of Mexico City, there’s a HUGE ski contingentthere. Ask anyone in Vail. …

Lava Moon, our cool little Eastside band, is having a record release party tonight, April 12, and tomorrow night, April 13, to celebrate the release of its debut record. Tonight’s bash is at The Tap, while the band holds forth at Rafterson Saturday night. Special guest musicianswho have performed with Lava Moon will be at both shows. The band’s subsequent Hawai’ian tourbegins next week with a special performance on April 20 at the 21st Annual East Maui Taro Festival in Hana. By the way, cool album cover art by Jesse Barlet, just so’s you know. …

The Mammoth Lakes Trails System Coordinating Committee, the MLTSCC, badly needs a new name. Suggestions welcome here. In the meantime, Public Works chief Ray Jarvisjust calls it “The CC” and lets it go at that. ...

This past week was International Dark Skies Week, and we say, here’s to the 1994 Northridge Quake.It knocked out the power in much of Los Angeles. Many residents called local emergency centersreporting a strange “giant, silvery cloud” in the dark sky. That giant, silvery cloud was the Milky Way, which many residents had just seen for the very first time. …

I want to win this race so bad, but it hasn’t happened yet, and unfortunately it won’t happen this year. I will be withdrawing from the Boston Marathon due to an injury.”…

It is now the end of the 2013 Village Championshipseason, and it was a great one, thanks in no small part to the Mammoth Mountain Race Department, along with Happy Hour sponsors, Lakanuki, Clocktower, Whitebark, Campo, Gomez’s, Slocum’s, Giovanni’s, Toomey’s, and Roberto’s. …

ICARE(Inyo/Mono County Animal Resources & Education has its 17th annual Fundraising Dinneron Saturday, April 13at 6 p.m. in the Charles Brown Auditorium.
