The Kamikaze Bike Games on Sept. 20 got a big boost this past week when USA Cycling announced its 2014 Professional Mountain Bike Gravity Tour (Pro GRT). In its sixth year, it will feature six events coast-to-coast, beginning April 19-20 at Beech Mountain, N.C. …

Hats off to Tim Fesko, owner, with his wife Mary, of the Meadowcliff Lodge and RV Resort near Coleville after the resort won, for the fifth time in five years, an “A Grade” from the nationwide Guest Reviews. It was one of 32 resorts that won the award, out of about 3,000 resorts. …

We’re still trying to track this one down but it was just too good to wait on. A Paiute tribal elder recently told a Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest employee, “Mark,” who then told John and Carolyn Webb of Twin Lakes Resort, who then told Von’s Pharmacist John Arnold, who then told us that it’s going to snow in February, March and April. Real snow. ...

Rock ‘N’ Bowl is getting ready to rock and roll, and everyone over there on Chateau Road is on a frenetic pace. Events are booked for mid-March, sez the King Kegler himself, and lane tune-ups are on the immediate horizon. …

With the addition of ski halfpipe and ski slopestyle events, freeskiing will make its Olympic debut at the Sochi Winter Games in Russia, not that the actual athletes might care that much. “The Olympics need us a lot more than we need them,” sez Jeff Schmuck, communications manager for the Association of Freeskiing Professionals. “We are excited about the Olympics and see it as a great opportunity to showcase our sport, but it is by no means the end-all be-all.” …

From Dane Karch, who is somewhere under 10 years of age, proud in fishing a race: “I just won last place!” …

Gov. Jerry Brown finally took the plunge and declared a “drought emergency” in California last Friday, Jan. 17. It won’t bring the snow, or rain, but it does allow farmers, ranchers and others to tap into emergency loans, lower loan rates, etc. …

Among the Birthday Crowd this week are Nancy Bristow and Jim Stimson. …

Speaking of drought, those high school students in Bishop who sent a rubber chicken named Camilla into space and regularly meet to launch other helium balloon experiments under the tutelage of former NASA scientist and astronomer Tony Phillips—who just married Katherine Allen this past weekend (congratulations!)—have done it again. Their work appeared in a Jan. 17 article in ScienceNow magazine that shows photos of the drought over the Eastern Sierra from 100,000 feet above the earth. “We had a flight almost exactly a year ago, and at that time the mountains were almost completely covered in snow,” said Amelia Phillips, 17, a member of the group. “In the recent images very few mountains were covered with snow. We knew we were in a drought, but it wasn’t clear to us before we saw the pictures how bad it is.” …

News on the video front: In case you didn’t know, Stacey Powells, late of KMMT, and the indomitable weatherman Howard Sheckter have joined with videographer Dan McConnell. Powells and Sheckter are doing a weekly local TV program, and Powells said “more consistent programming” is on the way. …

Review from last weekend’s Grand Prix show, featuring The Faint: “Epically awesome,” said one who oughta know. …

Quiz-time: What’s a person called when he/she is WAY into geo-thermal projects? Among the heat-seeking cognoscenti, they’re known as “geo-junkies,” if you really want to know. …

The Board of Supervisors meeting was packed this past week with members of the Mono County Fisheries Commission, Eastern Sierra Land Trust reps and other representatives to hear Tony Vaught of Professional Aquaculture Services regarding his draft report pertaining to Conway Ranch. Sounds wonky, but it wasn’t. …

That was Supes candidate Stacy Corless and Kirk Stapp among the audience at the Board meeting in Mammoth on Tuesday, by the way, no doubt boning up on All Things Mono. …

The Eastern Sierra Dog Adoption Day will be at the Vons in Bishop on Saturday, Jan. 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Please consider adopting your next canine companion and help to save a life, eh? …

Mammoth Hospital has become a participant of the National Rural Accountable Care Organization (NRACO). Since passage of the Affordable Care Act, more than 360 ACOs have been established, serving over 5.3 million Americans with Original Medicare. The NRACO is a collaboration of nine innovative rural communities in Indiana, Michigan and California that are working together to improve care for rural Medicare beneficiaries. ...

Every two years, the medical staff team at Mammoth Hospital elects a new Chief of Staff to oversee the team of medical professionals. Currently, the medical staff has over 30 active members including physicians, dentists, and other health professionals.  Beginning Jan. 1, a new term began with Tomi Bortolazzo, MD, stepping in as the new Chief of Staff for Mammoth Hospital. She was elected Vice Chief of Staff two years ago and now replaces Audrey Pauly, MD, who held the position for the previous two years. …

Said one Eastside resident making some turns in Japan this week: “When this is the forecast [snow!] and 20cm+ falls in a day, we may not come home…” 

And finally, everyone’s talking about 2013 being a dry year—the driest, in fact, since California started keeping record in the 1840s. But one U.C. Berkeley paleoclimatologist, B. Ingran, makes her living looking much, much further back—and she says this could be the driest year in 500 years. Hold the snow dances for now, and start asking your ancestors what it was like in the year 1580.
