What's Up, Up Here? Sept. 21-27, starring Yosemite Steve, Outdoor Writers, Dan Wright et al

September 21, 2012

As fundraisers go, it’s hard to imagine we’ll see one that’s much better than the benefit for Matt Graef at Z-Ranch on Tuesday. Fabulous raffle prizes, great food, and much needed money to the family of Graef, our Mammoth High School football player who is battling cancer. That was small-town Mammoth at its best, we say. …

We were interested in what Steve Bumgardner, aka Yosemite Steve, had to say about the high country night sky. Research indicates that above 8,000 feet, the eye begins to lose its full powers because of oxygen deprivation, and continues to lose it the higher you go. The “sweet spot,” as it were, is Mammoth, situated smack dab in the center of 8,000 feet. …

Tallus and Green Fox Events hosted a special events mixer and trade party last Thursday (Sept. 13). Representing food vendors at the ski & golf residence club included: Mimi Kunz from Mimi’s Cookie Bar; Carrie Hoeltzel from CJ’s Grill; Lynne Blanche from Java Joint; and Brandon Brocia from Bleu Handcrafted Foods. Appetizers were also provided by Mammoth Mountain’s Executive Chef Marc Mora. Kim Stravers poured attendees their choice of red or white wine as they mingled with—and networked with—one another.  …

Others at the party included Quart Keyes from the Chamber of Commerce; Interactive Marketing Manager for the Tourism Bureau, Christie Osborne; Michael Edelshtain from Mammoth Creek Inn; photographers Susan Morning and Rebecca Garrett; our pals from KMMT and KRHV Katie Mac, Stacey Powells and Paul and Pam Payne; Juliana Olinka from Mammoth Lakes Foundation (she can really dance!); our friends from The Sheet, Stayden and Geisel; Dawn Vereuck of Mountain Living—Interiors & Design; and Jen Heintzelman from Convict Lake Resort. But wait! There’s more: Also among the vendors at the Tallus and Green Fox event was a new wedding concierge business called Elite Beauty Group. This group consists of local hairstylists Carrie Guerriero, Lisa Peterson, Chandler Payne and Daryl Hooper. …

Gosh it was swell to see Bill Becher out and around last weekend, in a wheelchair because of a near-fatal climbing accident at Joshua Tree earlier this year. He says he does the best he can. “What are you going to do,” sez he, “lie in bed all day?” …

Speaking of outdoor writers, that was big-time fun at the Outdoor Writers Association of California confab last weekend in Mammoth. Thanks to all the guides, shutterbugs, writers, horsemen and the too-many-to-name who made it happen. Thanks mostly to board members Monica Prelle and David Page, and to Michael Vanderhurst of the Visit Mammoth contingent. …

For those wondering what happens to the departed Mark Wardlaw’s old duties as community development director, the workload has fallen on the shoulders of Town Manager Dave Wilbrecht. His first act as development director was Wednesday, a mere eight hours into his new duties, when he presented town planner Ellen Clark her five-year recognition award at the Town Council. Everyone knows Ellen was born in England, right? …

Happy Birthday, Stacy Corless! …

That’s a nice layout by Running Times magazine, slipping Mammoth into the feature well (middle) and headlining it, “Elite Base Camp.” …

It seemed like it took a year, at least to the residents of Lakeview Boulevard, but the Voodoo Chute construction is nearly done, complete with geothermal heating elements to help motorists in what has been the nastiest bobsled run in Mammoth for years.
