Airport eligible for federal funding

The rough and not always ready road to Mammoth Yosemite Airport could see some major repair work in the next few years after new Census 2010 population numbers triggered a different classification for some roads.

The new classification allows roads used by a community with more than 5,000 people—in this case Mammoth Lakes—to access federal funds for roads that are heavily used by the community, even if the roads are not within the community.

Winter storm predicted for Tuesday night may come in lighter than expected

A heavy winter storm predicted for Tuesday evening has been downgraded and much of the moisture expected to hit the Sierra may stay west of the crest.

As much as 16 to 20 inches of snow was forecast for the crest of the Sierra above Mammoth by Wednesday morning, but a recent update by Mammoth’s amateur weather forecaster is pulling back from that.

“Apparently…the models were wrong in the placement of the upper low as it is verifying too far west,†Howard Sheckter wrote on his website Tuesday evening.

Dr. Nancy Peterson Walter, noted anthropologist, dead at 77

Nancy Peterson Walter, 77, a resident of Mammoth Lakes for the past 19 years, died at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno on Feb. 5.

The cause of death, according to her husband, John, was leukemia.

Born in Rockford, Ill., on Dec. 3, 1935, Walter achieved her childhood dream of becoming an anthropologist, culminating in being awarded her PhD in 1986.

Community invited to give input at meeting next Saturday at the Minaret Mall

The Tuolumne River that runs alongside the Tioga Pass Road on the west side of the pass and the Merced River in Yosemite Valley are lined with cabins and resort structures, trails, and bike paths.

The two rivers were also recently designated as federal Wild and Scenic Rivers, in an attempt to preserve their beauty and ecological integrity into perpetuity.

There has still been no deadline for high-speed broadband service set for Swall Meadows and Crowley Lake after Verizon backed out of a Jan. 28 deadline and the Public Utilities Commission last week rejected Verizon’s request for a deadline extension.

Calls to Verizon were not returned before press time.

Says Mammoth ‘looks like a swap meet’ in summer months

After years of wrangling over what to do about the proliferation of what she considers unsightly banner signs in Mammoth, Planning Commissioner Elizabeth Tenney said she has a solution.

“We should eliminate all banners except for special events,” she said at a commission meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 13. “We should eliminate all ‘temporary’ signs, too.”

Fight over Mammoth Creek could be headed to court

“Settlement” talks between Mammoth’s community water district and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power appear to have broken down Thursday and the two sides could be headed to court.

According to Mammoth Community Water District attorney Alan Lilly, a hearing date has now been set for Sept. 6, barring a possible settlement between now and then.

DSES Paralympic Sport Camp a success

Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra wrapped up its third Paralympic Sport Camp of this winter season, and organizers said they were thrilled with the prospective Paralympic talent the camp produced The Alpine Ski and Race Camp is one of several DSES Paralympic Sport camps, which are geared as recruitment camps for further Paralympic training.

Objection period set for Sherwin-Scenic Loop Project

The Inyo National Forest, Mammoth Ranger District, has prepared an Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Sherwin-Scenic Loop Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project. This project proposes to conduct fuels treatments by mowing brush and thinning trees on approximately 1,100 acres managed by the Inyo National Forest around Sherwin Creek, Mammoth Creek, and Mammoth Scenic Loop areas, in and around the town of Mammoth Lakes.
