Reno man found dead behind Pinecrest residence, cause of death unknown pending autopsy

The body that was found behind a Mammoth home early Monday morning, Sept. 1, has been identified as 29-year-old Robert Scott Barsan of Reno, according to the Mammoth Lakes Police.

The identification of the body, found by a Mammoth resident behind a home on Pinecrest Avenue, was released at about noon on Tuesday, Sept. 2, after Barsan’s next of kin were notified, said Police Chief Dan Watson.

Lotsa cyclists; lotsa road closures Sept. 6

The 2014 Mammoth Fall Century and Gran Fondo cycling event expects approximately 1,200 cyclists in Mammoth Lakes Saturday, Sept. 6, and as a result, traffic patterns on a number of roads will change to accommodate the riders.

Cyclists will ride on highways S.R. 203, U.S. 395, S.R. 120, and Benton Crossing Road throughout the day.

Japanese climber falls 125 feet, flown out of backcountry

A Japanese climber who fell 125 feet when he slipped while trying to climb Sawtooth Ridge area above Bridgeport was flow out of the backcountry with serious injuries on Aug. 15.

According to the Mono County Sheriff’s Department, the incident occurred on Friday, Aug. 15 at approximately 12:55 p.m. when sheriff’s dispatch received a call regarding an injured climber on a ridge in the Sawtooth Ridge area.

Two climbers were attempting to climb the ridge and during their ascent, they were climbing up a 45-degree ice field with ice axes, according to a sheriff’s department news release.

Man steals car, leads cops on high speed chase, arrested at gun point

An Quartz Hill man who stole a car, nearly hit a law enforcement officer with it, and led cops on a high speed chase on U.S. 395 on Aug. 10 was finally arrested at gun point near Lone Pine after spike strips on the road disabled the vehicle he was driving.

The man, Evan Robert Furubotten, 25, Quartz Hill, California, is now in the Inyo County Jail.

The incident occurred at about 3:20 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 10 when Inyo County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Ranch House Cafe in Olancha on the report of a "suspicious subject" refusing to leave.

Ultra runners outrun by weather, floods, have to be rescued

Getting an early start and checking the weather in advance might have saved two runners from a backcountry rescue earlier this week.

According to the Mono County Sheriff's Department, on the evening of Wednesday, August 6, at approximately 6 p.m., Mono County Sheriff’s dispatch received notification that a SPOT device had been activated on the Pacific Crest Trail near Upper Piute Meadows.

Bishop man arrested on two domestic violence charges

Wednesday night at about 6 p.m. during routine patrol in the town of Bishop, an Inyo County Sheriff’s Deputy and Tribal Police Officer spotted Ray Bencoma, 39, from Bishop, who is wanted in two prior domestic violence incidents.

Once Bencoma realized he had been seen, he darted into a residence in the 400 block of Pa Ha Lane. The Inyo County SED team, which consists of members of the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office, Bishop Police Department, and Inyo County District Attorney’s Office arrived; however Bencoma refused to come out.

Nevada man dies in Lee Vining motorcycle crash

A 59-year-old Nevada man on Sunday died of injuries he suffered when the motorcycle he was driving ran head-on into  a car near Picnic Grounds Road near Lee Vining..

James McGifford, of Dayton, Nevada, was riding northbound on U.S. 395 on Sunday, when a car driven by Shirley Liang, of Cupertino, crossed into his path while attempting a left turn onto the road.

Her vehicle, according to a spokesperson from the California Highway Patrol, "moved her vehicle directly into the path of the motorcycle."

Doctor weighs in on smoke hazards

Search-and-Rescue helps Mt. Ritter climbers

A Mono County rescuer team last weekend helped a father and son off Mt. Ritter after the climbers were blocked by a rain-fueled waterfall, authorities said

The rescue was at about 3 p.m.

According to a report from the Mono County Search and Rescue team, the pair had attempted to summit Mt. Ritter, a popular peak located 13 miles northwest of Mammoth.

Mammoth Water District to sue local air pollution agency over geothermal decision

The Mammoth Community Water District said Friday, Aug.1, that it plans to sue the local air pollution controlled district for certifying an environmental document that is a necessary part of a proposed geothermal project that the district believes could harm Mammoth's water supply.

Ormat Technologies, the project proponent, will also be mentioned in the lawsuit as a "real party of interest," the news release from the the water district said.

Mammoth Community Water District made its announcement this morning, following a closed session meeting at the district office.
