Supe-elect Corless joins Board debate on chairmanship pay

For a brief moment this week, the five-member Mono County Board of Supervisors suddenly became a six-member panel.


Although seated in the gallery and without voting privileges, Supervisor-elect Stacy Corless of Mammoth on Tuesday, July 15, joined a debate regarding extra salary compensation for the supervisor occupying the chairmanship.


Her testimony, at the behest of South County Supervisor Fred Stump, caught Corless by surprise, but not in a negative way.

Geologists warn of quakes in new report

In a major new report on earthquake scenarios in the Mammoth area, geologists say they have identified five faults in Long Valley capable of producing temblors of 6.7 or greater—roughly as strong as the 1994 Northridge quake.

Along with scientific data, the scientists say planners in the area should include the data in preparing future scenarios that would impact everything from property destruction to emergency health care.

Motorcyclist leads cops on 130 mph chase

A San Diego motorcyclist who led police on a 130-mph chase on U.S. 395 south between the Mammoth Yosemite Airport and Bishop was arrested on July 6 near the Pine Creek Road turnoff on suspicion of reckless driving and driving on a suspended license.

The chase started at about 8:03 p.m. when California Highway Patrol officers saw a red sport motorcycle traveling southbound on the highway near the Mammoth Yosemite Airport.

Reds shuttle inspections surprise riders

Pulling over a couple of Reds Meadow shuttle buses for unannounced vehicle inspections on the busiest day on the busiest road of the entire summer season wasn’t exactly guaranteed to make the California Highway Patrol the most popular player in town.

It happened on Saturday, July 5, and the lines to get on the shuttle buses that take visitors and hikers to Devils Postpile National Monument from Mammoth Mountain’s Adventure Center were dozens deep and yards long.

More ‘fireworks’ at Crowley Lake

BRIDGEPORT—Fred Stump might have thought it was going to be a routine Fourth of July at Crowley Lake.

It wasn’t.

Stump, the supervisor representing South County and Crowley Lake, instead found himself in charge of a makeshift emergency command post after Mono County Sheriff Ralph Obenberger, citing budget concerns over overtime pay, held back the county’s mobile command post.

Florida hiker flown out of backcountry

A solo hiker from Florida who became lost near the Silver Peak area southwest of Mammoth had to be flown out of the backcountry early last week after she was located by Mono County Search and Rescue team members.

The female hiker became lost during a solo, multi-day backpack trip sometime during the day on June 23 while traversing the Cascade Valley area, around Silver Peak.

According to the Mono County Sheriff’s Department, for a 24-hour period, the hiker attempted to relocate the trail, but she then became ill and she stayed in place overnight.

Drought brings ‘double whammy’ heat, fire danger

The next two weeks are shaping up to be the two hottest weeks of the high country summer and there is little relief in sight, forecasters say.

Although Mammoth is unlikely to break any records, it will be close, according to Chris Smallcomb, a meteorologist with the national weather service in Reno.

“You will get within a degree or two of breaking records, likely,” Smallcomb said.

The hottest days will likely be the first three days of July and then the first three days of the second week of July, he said.

Police Chief Dan Watson retires, effective Dec. 29

After four years of serving in what originally was designed to be a one-year tour, Dan Watson this past week announced his retirement as Chief of the Mammoth Lakes Police Department.

 

RAW: Cars vandalized at local "Park and Ride" lot at 203/395 junction

For those carpoolers and others who park in the dirt lot on southbound Hwy 203, across from the chain-up area, please beware that several vehicles have been vandalized, according to the Mono County Sheriff's Department.

On Tuesday, June 24 at approximately 7:15 a.m, a local resident parked a vehicle in the dirt lot for the duration of the day. When they returned to their vehicle around 5 p.m., the driver noticed the front passenger side window had been smashed.

There was a large rock next to the vehicle which is believed to have been used to smash the window.

Man bucked off mule, has to be airlifted out of backcountry

A Bakersfield man who was bucked off a mule and injured had to be airlifted out of the Mt. Whitney area backcountry June 24 after his injuries left him unable to walk.

At about 9:20 a.m., Inyo County Sheriff’s dispatch received notification that a SPOT device had been activated with the approximate coordinates of Little Whitney Meadow, west of Lone Pine, on the west side of the Sierra crest south and west of Mt. Whitney.

Missing Mt Whitney hiker found dead after five-day search

The body of a Mt. Whitney hiker missing since June 14 was found Thursday in a steep chute above Mirror Lake, only about a mile from where the man was supposed to meet his friends on June 14 after he and two friends had climbed Whitney for the fifth time.

Early in the evening of June 19, during an aerial reconnaissance mission above Mirror Lake west of Outpost Camp, search crews located what is believed to be the remains of missing hiker John Likely, 60, Dumont, New Jersey, in an extremely steep chute.
