County residents hit their county supervisors Tuesday with a blizzard of suggestions designed to make the county function better and to bring an ever-increasing number of people into the county.

It was all part of a county-sponsored workshop, and the ideas flew fast and furious.

It seems a shame, with more than 300 days of sunshine, that Mono County buildings don’t take advantage of solar power more often, according to at least one county supervisor.

That supervisor, Larry Johnston, has been trying to change this over the past two years of his term, bringing solar energy to meetings again and again.

Finally, his efforts may pay off.

A breakdown in communication with Town of Mammoth still problematic

Mono County and the Town of Mammoth Lakes have been dancing around each other over the issue of garbage for many years.

On Tuesday, the Mono County Board of Supervisors, for the first time, indicated it might be willing to “take out the trash” alone, if need be—even if it means raising parcel fee rates.

Four-day event will feature ‘Gran Fondos’ on roads, mountain

The band-new Kamikaze Bike Games, a five-day event scheduled for the first week of September, will add several new features to some familiar events.

Apart from bringing back mountain bike racing on Mammoth Mountain for the third time since 2005, the Sept. 4-8 festival this year folds in the stalwart Sept. 7 High Sierra Fall Century road bike ride, with a “Gran Fondo” twist.

Halferty replaces Hennarty as housing chief

The Mammoth Lakes Housing, Inc. (MLH) Board of Directors announced this past week that current Deputy Director Jennifer Halferty has been appointed to serve as the Executive Director for Mammoth Lakes Housing.

Halferty has been with the non-profit workforce housing organization for the past seven years and before that she worked four years in the administration department of the Mono County Library.

She replaces Pam Hennarty, who resigned the position to take a job with Inyo County.

Track, ESTA, events come up big in spring funding cycle

With a fistful of dollars in the form of Measure U sales tax funds, the Mammoth Town Council released $455,635 this past week, for projects ranging from further construction at the Whitmore Track to improvements in the town’s bus service.

Sequester won’t affect Mono Lake, Bodie

The sequester will not affect operations at either Mono Lake or Bodie State Park, according to officials.

“This is one time I’m glad to be connected to the state park system,” said Mono Lake Ranger Dave Marquart. Mono Lake faced budget cuts last year when California was in deficit and the park had to implement a new fee system to adjust.

Free Tax Aide in Mammoth

The AARP Tax-Aide Foundation, partnered with the Mammoth Lakes Library, is offering free tax help, preparation, and e-filing. 

The program assists low and middle-income taxpayers. The volunteer counselors are trained and certified through the IRS/AARP training program each year and are qualified to assist with most all of the tax issues residents face.

This service is being provided in the Mammoth Lakes Library on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 p.m to 5 p.m. throughout tax season, through April 15. Spanish speaking volunteers are available.

Gregory to speak at April 9 meeting

Mammoth Mountain Ski Area CEO Rusty Gregory will speak about the future of June Mountain Ski Area at a Mono County Board of Supervisors meeting on April 9 in Bridgeport.

Mammoth Lakes and other county residents can access the meeting via videoconference by going to the Mammoth Sierra Mall (Shogun mall), third floor, at the county’s conference room at the south end of the building. Gregory is slated to speak sometime after about 1:30 p.m.
