Bishop man fled scene of crime, arrested in Mammoth
Local law enforcement is hoping for some information about a suspected murder attempt near Bishop after the shooter fled the scene and was arrested at the Shady Rest RV Park in Mammoth Lakes last week.
According to Inyo County officials, on June 13, at about 10:30 p.m., sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Wilkerson Ranch area south of Bishop for reports of shots fired.
According to a news release from the sheriff’s office, with the assistance of California Highway Patrol and Bishop Police Department, law enforcement immediately secured the scene upon arrival and attempted to locate the suspect.
Officers were able to determine that at least one shot was fired at the victim within the residence. The suspect was identified as Scott Chad Smith, 40, of Bishop.
Smith was located June 14 at the Shady Rest RV Park in Mammoth and is being held at the Inyo County jail for attempted murder.
Bail has been set for $500,000.
Assisting in the search were Inyo County Sheriff’s Deputies, Bishop Police Department and the California Department of Fish and Game.
