Some Alltel customers from the Tri-Valley area activated their conversions to AT&T in Bishop, only to discover, while on the road, that their cell service was dead. “They had to drive home to call customer service who told them, ‘We didn’t take over the towers, just the service and billing,’ said Supervisor "Hap" Hazard at the Long Valley Regional Planning and Advisory Committee meeting Wednesday evening.
“I’ve had a lot of correspondence within the last 48 hours," Hazard said. "Those who depend completely on cell service, having no land lines, have been left with no form of emergency contact." Hazard has explained the problem to Congressman Howard "Buck" McKeon, who will approach the Federal Communications Commission in an effort to restore the same level of service that was provided by Alltel.
