The Mammoth High School Cross Country Ski team dominated in the open division at the Kirkwood freestyle race Jan. 27.
It was a beautiful day in Kirkwood and the high school team performed well on the flat and fast 5k course. The racers enjoyed a tailwind on the way out, but had to contend with a strong headwind to the finish.
Mammoth’s boys team took the top three spots with Jack Roten coming in first, Carson Bold was less than a second behind him and Phillip Oxford rounded out with a close third place finish. On the girl’s team, only two racers traveled to the race and they brought Mammoth more glory with a second place finish by Jody Meads and a fourth place finish by Kylie LaFramboise.
According to Coach Alana Levin, “The team is showing strong results at the races and looking to be contenders for state championships in the open division. The team’s hard work and dedication to the sport is really coming together and is showing in their results.”
Meanwhile, teammate Amanda Kirkeby represented the Eastern Sierra Nordic Ski Association at a competition in Soldier Hollow, Utah, last week at the Intermountain/Rocky Mountain Junior National Qualifiers. Kirkeby raced with over 600 other athletes from around the nation and placed at 38th in her division in the 5K mass start skate race and 52nd in the classic 1.3km sprint race in a tight field of racers with a time of 4:26.16, +40.40 seconds off the leader.
The Mammoth Middle School Nordic Team, coached by Robin Morning and Marie French, sent 10 athletes to Kirkwood on Friday, Jan. 27, for their first school race of the season.
