An inspiring evening of poetry

I want thank all of those who made last Saturday’s Mono County Finals of the Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest possible.

It was an inspiring evening of poetry recitation that was moving and thought provoking. Thank you to the judges: Jo Bacon, Malcolm Clark, Stacey Coreless, Noelle Deinken, Bartshe Miller; the accuracy judge Blaire Lee; the prompter and County coach—poet Eva Poole Gilson; the tabulator—Tabby Mannetter; the sound and lighting tech Tim Casey.

Thank you also to the high school teachers who coached their students—Mr. Johnson (Coleville High), Ms. Olinka (Mammoth High), and Ms. Taylor (Lee Vining).

I also would like to thank the sponsors of Poetry Out Loud—Eastern Sierra Community Bank, California Arts Council, Poetry Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, and all the sponsors and donors to the Mammoth Lakes Foundation who make our contributions to education and the arts possible.

Thank you to the audience that attended and shared the experience with me; an audience that extended beyond family and friends to members of the community who recognize the importance of poetry being spoken out loud. Finally, I extend a sincere thank you to all the students that participated at all levels from the classroom to the county competition. We are introducing our youth to an art that is being reinvigorated and teaching the importance of the power of the spoken word—and that is life changing.
