Mammoth Unified to appoint new school board member

Mammoth Unified School District has taken the first step to fill the school board vacancy left by Dr. Andrew Bourne’s resignation and death and will point a new board member by Feb. 23, according to the district.
The board met this week on Tuesday, and agreed that it would be better to appoint a new board member as opposed to holding an expensive special election.
“We will advertise in the local newspapers and with public service announcements,” Superintendent Rich Boccia said. “Applications with letters of intent are due no later than Monday, Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. and should be addressed to me.”
He said the district will screen applications on Feb. 21 and conduct interviews in an open session on Feb. 23 beginning at 3 p.m. in the MHS Library.
The board will make the appointment that same evening to meet the 60 day timeline” for filling a vacancy, Boccia said.
The new school district appointee will join a special board study session in early March and be sworn in on March 22, he said.
Bourne’s position would have been up for election this November.
