Sonora, Monitor Passes Close Temporarily; Here is What Else is Open, What is Closed

Staff Writer

Mother Nature always bats last, so it's not surprising some passes are closing in advance of the incoming weather. Here is a rundown of what is closed as of May 20, and, what is open, from an Inyo National Forest news release at noon:

Sonora Pass and Monitor Pass are temporarily closing for the incoming storm. Tioga Pass is currently open, but visitors should keep an eye on the weather there as well.

Horseshoe Meadows Rd opened yesterday. Today, staff is opening Silver Canyon, and the White Mt Rd. to the Patriarch Grove Turnoff. Expect snow along the Patriarch Grove Rd. to the parking lot, so visitors should plan to need to hike in for now. There is still deep snow on the way to Sheep Pass, so the road towards Barcroft Gate is closed at the Patriarch Grove turnoff.

The Lakes Basin Road was expected to be open earlier this month but can unexpectedly large number of dead or dying trees are complicating, and delaying the work. Many of the trees are close to public trails, restrooms, campgrounds and other facilities, making the removal of the trees even slower.
