Why the Mammoth Food & Wine Experience?

The Mammoth Lakes Foundation’s mission is to support higher education and the arts in the Eastern Sierra and has done so vigorously since its birth in 1989 under the guidance of Dave McCoy and a small group who shared his vision. 

That group has grown over the years, and the work of the Foundation has made and continues to make an impact in Mammoth Lakes and the Eastern Sierra. Non-profits, however, need not just the moral support of its founders, donors and supporters, but their financial support as well to continue and thrive.

One of the major fundraisers for the MLF was the Dave McCoy Invitational Ski Race which ran successfully for a number of years.  However, as the participants aged the preference for a less strenuous activity became apparent.  Last year the Foundation teamed with Blue Sky and the Mammoth Schools NOW Foundation to have the Blue Sky Fest celebrating food, wine, music, adventure benefiting education and the arts.  The food and wine portion of that event was so successful, that the Foundation opted this year to repeat the Food and Wine experience as a solo venture, joined again by the Mammoth Schools NOW Foundation—and the Mammoth Food & Wine Experience was born.

Education and the arts is what help keep our community sustainable. A successful event not only supports education and the arts, it also serves as an economic stimulus for the community as it brings new visitors to the area in addition to hosting locals and second home owners.


Food & Wine Seminars provide the ultimate opportunity for guests to educate their palates by learning from leading authorities on a variety of topics including wine appreciation and gourmet cooking. Select seminars feature wine and/or food tastings and are presented by well-known personalities. We are currently working on booking the best and brightest for the 2012 event. Check back later in April for an up-to-date list of the lineup.  This year the schedule calls for 12 seminars over two days—everything from an intimate setting for 30, to a theatre setting for 50; to a tent that holds 100 for truly educational, enlightening, and entertaining seminars.

Last year we held six seminars:  A perfect match, “if you like that sort of thing…”, wine, food and the California table led by David Katz (C.I.A, Greystone chef/instructor and owner of Panevino); The Emergence of Paso Robles,  with  vintner Gary Eberle of Eberle Winery; California Vintage with Chef Richard Haake and Peachy Canyon Winery;  Pinot Noir – The Mystery Revealed with Larry Brooks, Tolosa Winery Winemaker and one of California’s top growers and winemakers;   Chef Frederic’s Best with Mammoth’s very own Chef Frederic Pierrel of the Lakefront restaurant; and Spanish Wine and Tapas with Spanish wine expert Chris Collins partnering with Winery Chefs’ Richard Haake.  What this year holds will be revealed shortly.


In addition to the already announced chefs, Danny Farr, Wolfgang Puck’s “Pizza man” is scheduled to be part of the “Dream Team” reunion.


Friday evening private wine dinners are being arranged with various local restaurant pairing with wineries to offer special activities beyond those planned during Friday and Saturday at the Foundation location.  Committed so far is Whitebark Restaurant at the Westin Monache and Pokonobe Lodge.  Details and more locations to follow.


A new addition to the overall event is a Wine Walk at the Village in Mammoth on Friday evening from 5-7 pm with 10 wineries pouring 40+ wines.  This is another way to open up the event, add components to engage a wider audience and a means of getting more of the community involved. 

The more successful the Mammoth Food & Wine Experience is, the more it benefits education and the arts in Mammoth—with net proceeds going both to the Mammoth Lakes Foundation and Mammoth Schools Now Education Foundation

Saturday evening’s guests will be entertained by participating in the People’s Choice at the “Great Outdoor Cooking Competition” that includes competing teams from community college culinary programs vying with the “Dream Team.”  Committed thus far is last year’s people’s choice winner Bakersfield Community College and Santa Barbara City College—where it just so happens Dream Team Chef Jennifer Jasinski of Denver, Colorado began her formal culinary education.

Last year’s live auction also proved to be quite entertaining. 

The event will be topped off by a lively, get-your-dancing-shoes-on presentation by the “Blues Brothers”(http://www.epic1.com/music/blues-brothers/) as they present the traveling version of their show to wind up the evening.

The “BLUES BROTHERS” is comprised of two very talented & accredited performers, George Ratliff and Michael B. Moynahan. The BLUES BROTHERS Show was originally designed by George for Universal Studio’s in California and Japan. He also designed the “BEETLEJUICE GRAVEYARD REVUE” and the “MOTOWN EXPRESS” shows for them as well. The “BLUES BROTHERS” have been a partnership for over fifteen years. They have received rave reviews all over the country with their high energy show.

George Ratliff got his start in New Your City in the Broadway cast of “Grease” followed by National Touring companies of “Sophisticated Ladies” as well as a Duke Ellington Musical. He has appeared in “The Majestic” with Jim Carrey as well as with Drew Carey in “Geppetto.”

Michael B. Moynahan is a show biz veteran of over 25 years. He enjoys a successful career as both an actor and musician. He can be seen daily on TV on the Emmy Award winning children’s series “ZOOBILEE ZOO.” He has had roles in television, Broadway, and made many commercials. He has also kept busy playing in various bands.
